There is a strange, stinging irony in the national anthem (aside from the strange singing irony that there's even such thing as a national anthem). The opening line in the English version is, "Oh Canada, our home and native land."
Imagine being *actually* native (i.e. of one of many First Nations, who experienced and in some cases still experience land theft and genocide) and having to hear that over and over again.
